Vastenavond - Carnival in the Netherlands

Carnival is a spring festival celebrated in the Southern and Eastern parts of the Netherlands, which can trace back to medieval time. It is a ritual that marks the end of winter and the return of summer. It is a 6-day feast of eating and drinking. Massive parades are hosted with people dressing in colourful costumes. It is not surprising to see fairy-tale characters dancing with famous political figures during this festive time.
