Agaseke

Commonly known as Agaseke, the long pyramid-shaped baskets are handcrafted from sisal and grass by women in Rwanda. The crafting skill is taught to the younger generation to preserve the culture. Historically, they are a symbol of the harvesting period. They are a symbol of the Rwandese culture and are referred to as the peace baskets* symbolizing the peace, hope, reconciliation, opportunity, and healing in Rwanda. They are used to carry food, transport goods, used as decorations during weddings and baby christenings, and are also presented as gifts. They are locally made in large quantities and are sold to generate income.
