Red envelopes are common in southeastern Asian countries. It's mostly given during New Year, from elders to children with money in it. It can also be given at any occasion when people want to give money to other people such as birthdays, weddings etc. It can also be used as a discrete means for any occasion when money exchange activities are involved.
